You can help create up to six times the impact ending poverty alongside people like Puta.
Puta and her family live in a region forgotten by an economy that leans hard on the tourist dollar.
“We worked hard but there was never enough,” Puta, mother of three, told us. “I cooked once in the morning – a basic meal of rice and eggs if we could get them. We ate that for lunch and if there was enough left, again at night. I worried that the children were not eating the right foods to be healthy, but we didn’t have any choice.”
Tourism has pushed the cost of living for ordinary families in this region sky high. For those who are without land or livestock, it cripples their ability to buy even the basics. Oil for cooking and vital medicine were often out of reach for Puta’s family. Access to a toilet was very limited and few families understood the links between hand washing, clean water and the constant illnesses their children suffered.
“We very much wanted to make things better for our children,” Puta and Wayan said.
“But we couldn’t see a way to make it happen.”
The big opportunity came through our church partner, MBM.
With the support of UnitingWorld donors and the expertise of our local partners, the community began a livestock breeding program – goats and chickens! Puta’s family are now the proud owners of a small ‘goat flock’, which they breed and sell at market for extra income and supply goat manure to the nearby coffee plantation.
Our partners also taught the community about health and sanitation, helped families build toilets and started small business groups.
Please make a donation today to enable UnitingWorld to reach more communities in need of support.
Families in Zimbabwe are waiting for the opportunity to breed goats for income; the lives of children in India will be saved because of education about health and access to clean water; West Timorese people are taking control of their futures through start up loans for businesses.
We’ll combine your gift with Australian Aid funding and use it to create the same success we’ve seen with Puta and her community.
It will lift up a family and give them access to income opportunities, health care and education for their children.
Right now, it will have up to six times the impact* across our projects in Asia, Africa and the Pacific. If you’re able, please give before June 30.
WE’RE BETTER TOGETHER.
*UnitingWorld is a valued partner of the Australian Government. We have committed to contribute $1 for every $5 we receive from a designated Australian Aid grant – thus ‘up to six times the impact’. Every donation you make will be combined with Australian Aid funding to reach more people.
